Community Service meets every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. under the direction of Clareen Bolton, Bev Johnson, and Sharon Magnuson. We have a group of dedicated ladies who like to come to share their love of quilting for others, as well as enjoy the social interaction. Others prefer to come in to get supplies and work at home.
All members of Needle Arts are welcome to come on any Thursday to get fabric and supplies for community service projects. Our heartfelt thanks to all who donate their time, materials, and talents to make Community Service successful.
Below is a list of suggested quilt sizes if you wish to donate. These are recommendations, not absolute requirements.

Teens: 50 inches x 65 inches
2023 Community Service Year
The Community Service quilt donation for 2023 was 443 quilts! In addition, they donated 137 other items including flannel blankets, burp bibs, and knitted and crocheted blankets, afghans, scarves, hats, and shawls. Many thanks go to our Community Service needle workers.
In the picture of Sharon Magnuson and Fran Swart to the right, 80 quilts were taken to Beale Air Force Base for children of the deployed and children with special needs. Other quilts donated during the holidays - the Loomis Basin Christmas Basket Program received 32 baby quilts and 60 teen/adult quilts; St. Vincent DePaul was given 59 quilts for children and teens for Lincoln families in need. Additional organizations receiving quilts during the year were Koinonia, Pre-Head Start programs, and Acres of Hope.
In addition, Quilts were donated to Ukraine and Maui for the fire victims. It is unknown how many blankets went out because President Jeanne Helland sent out the request to the general group and they responded individually.

2024 Port Pillows
Our Community Service group made 74 port pillows within one week of getting the call to fulfill this need for Sutter’s Infusion Center! These fit over a car’s seat belt to cushion an infusion patient’s access port, usually found on the chest. Amazing work ladies!!
Cheryl, who brought this need to our attention, is pictured holding the donated port pillows. She delivered them to Sutter’s infusion center. We hope to be able to continue making port pillows and not only supply them to Sutter, but also Kaiser and UC Davis infusion centers on an ongoing basis.
2024 Aprons and Bonnets
Wehad the opportunity to donate 10 aprons and 5 bonnets, along with some bandanas to the Fruitvale Schoolhouse Museum in Lincoln. The museum sponsors field trips for local third grade classes that allow the children to experience what it was like to attend a one-room schoolhouse long ago.
Many of the children dress in costumes reminiscent of the times, but some children can't afford these outfits. By having aprons, bonnets and bandanas available, these children don't have to feel left out and can enjoy the field trip along with those in costume. Nettie Redden (not pictured), Sharon Magnuson, and Dawn Everhart were the worker bees who made these cute items. Thank you, Community Service, for all that you do for our community!
In 2023 Brenda Wright and her husband dropped off Community Service quilts to the Maui Quilt Shop. There were donated quilts from 48 of the 50 states, and the deliveries keep coming! They were so thankful for the Needle Arts contribution.
